Grammar checkers, paraphrasing tools, and translation assistants have become a common part not only of academic writing in a foreign language, but also of everyday tasks such as writing and correcting e-mails. This guide will walk you through selected tools that will make your work easier. With this goal in mind, we have divided the tools into three categories according to their main purpose and strengths. The tools you will find here were not chosen at random; the criteria were their quality and availability.
Since all language tools are still under development, much of the information may change in the future. At the moment (August 2025), however, it is up to date.

Who is this guide for and how to navigate it?
The guide is divided into three categories:
- Academic writing: here you will find tools that, thanks to their quality and features, are suitable for students and academics.
- Everyday communication: tools that will help you with simple and quick corrections (such as correcting an email or a short text).
- Multilingual writing: these tools provide the option to write in other languages.
In each category you will find several tools to choose from. Each of them has its advantages, advanced features, options, and a specific user interface.
What is the difference between the tools listed here and chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini?
Unlike chatbots, the listed tools are specifically developed to correct grammar and improve language, which is their main advantage. Thanks to this specialization, they are much more precise and efficient in editing text. Many of them also offer the option to edit the text directly in the tool, while allowing you to track the changes made to the text. Another advantage of these tools is that, due to their specific focus, they contain fewer hallucinations.

Academic writing and artificial intelligence
It is important to keep in mind that when using AI tools, ethical standards and recommendations must be followed. Before using such a tool, check whether your institution (or publisher) has recommendations that specify the use of artificial intelligence. It is common for some institutions to allow their students to use AI to correct grammar, without the need to cite AI. However, if changes are made to the content of the work, the use of AI usually needs to be acknowledged. Some institutions also prohibit the use of AI entirely or set precise conditions under which generative artificial intelligence can be used.

Main function: grammar correction (English, German, French, Spanish, etc.) is reliable and, in the free version, sufficient for common corrections.
Price: freemium (a subscription is required for advanced features).
Limitations in the free version: limited by the number of corrections.
Advanced features: the tool offers advanced features such as text summarization, paraphrasing, and AI Chat. Quillbot also provides the option to translate into many languages (however, it is not entirely reliable for the Czech language).
Extensions: for Chrome, Edge, Safari, Word. It also offers apps for Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS.
Interface: user-friendly and clean. You can log in with an email on the site, which creates an account where corrections and text changes will be stored.
Security: the tool is regularly developed and updated, data is not sold, strong security policy.
Other: allows corrections to be customized according to the type of text (e.g., research paper).
PaperRater
Main function: grammar correction.
Price: freemium.
Limitations in the free version: the number of characters that can be inserted is limited.
Advanced features: it breaks down errors and stylistic inaccuracies, also shows the word count and provides tips for writing and editing.
Extensions: none.
Interface: clean; after uploading the text, the user is redirected to a new, more user-friendly page. The interface is available only in English.
Security: the tool is regularly developed and updated, data is not passed on to third parties, strong security policy.
Other: entire documents can be uploaded.
Trinka
Main function: grammar correction, a tool created exclusively for academic and technical writing, focusing on correcting texts in English and Spanish.
Price: freemium.
Limitations in the free version: a limited number of credits is provided, which is renewed every month.
Advanced features: "Citation Formatter," "Plagiarism Checker," "AI Content Detector," "Citation Checker," "Journal Finder," LaTeX Proofreader.
Extensions: Trinka for Windows - beta version, Word add-in, browser plugins.
Interface: login by email, user-friendly, resembles the Grammarly interface, no ads, can be switched to Spanish, simplified Chinese, and Japanese.
Security: regular updates (including plugins), Trinka places great emphasis on data security and user privacy protection, does not train AI on user data, encrypts data and does not share it with third parties, has its own language model (does not use generative AI like ChatGPT) for grammar and spelling correction.
Other: option to create a personalized dictionary.
Grammarly
Main function: grammar correction, basic grammar and spelling check, clarity check, tone tracking (limited).
Price: freemium.
Limitations in the free version: the free version does not include advanced features such as plagiarism checking, advanced style suggestions, sentence variety, more detailed tone checking, and it also does not detect all nuances and more complex stylistic errors.
Advanced features: advanced grammar, spelling, and punctuation checking, vocabulary improvement suggestions, tone adjustments, rewriting of entire sentences, plagiarism and AI-generated text detection, genre-specific writing suggestions.
Extensions: Grammarly for Windows, browser extensions (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari), macOS, and a keyboard for mobile devices.
Interface: registration and login via email or Google/Facebook account required for the free version, user-friendly, suggestions are displayed directly in the text where they can then be checked and accepted, no ads in the free version, the interface language is English.
Security: they state that they follow strict privacy protocols, do not use text to train their AI models (unless they receive consent from the user), do not sell data to third parties, and are constantly updated and improved.
SentenceCheckup
Main function: English grammar correction.
Price: free.
Limitations in the free version: not suitable for correcting long texts (the website interface is not adapted for this).
Advanced features: the tool provides many other features, such as "Sentence Rewriter," "Sentence Counter," "Sentence Shortener," etc.
Extensions: none.
Interface: only in English, ads may occasionally appear.
Security: the tool does not store the inserted text, does not use it for training, and does not share data with third parties. The tool is also regularly updated.
Other: the tool also offers a so-called deep check, which redirects the user to the Grammarly page, and the text will also be checked by this tool.
Typli
Main function: an online tool for content creation and SEO optimization, generating texts, rewriting and expanding texts, plagiarism checking, proofreading texts, keyword analysis, competition analysis, optimizing texts for SEO, content structure suggestions.
Limitations in the free version: freemium.
Advanced features: daily limit for suggestions/summaries.
Extensions: it does not offer specific browser extensions, it is used directly on their platform, no desktop or mobile app is known.
Interface: no login required, it is intuitive, logically organized, no ads.
Security: data is encrypted during transmission and Typli uses secure servers, it is regularly updated.
Other: strong focus and optimization for the Czech and Slovak language and market, it is trained on Czech and Slovak data.
Scribens
Main function: reliable grammar correction in many languages (including Czech).
Price: freemium. The free version is sufficient for proofreading, the paid extended version additionally provides features such as choosing the tone of paraphrases.
Limitations in the free version: in the free version, the possible number of paraphrases and summaries is limited.
Advanced features: paraphrasing, text summarization, a dictionary linked to Wiktionary.
Extensions: MS Office 365, browser add-on, apps for Windows and MacOS.
Interface: it is user-friendly, simple, and the interface language can be set.
Security: data is not stored long-term.
Other: grammar correction is designed so that it offers not only the correct form, but also its justification and an explanation of the error.
DeepL
Main function: DeepL Write: grammar correction (not only in English, but also German, French, Italian, etc.), text summarization; DeepL Translate: translation of text and inserted documents (from 35 languages).
Price: freemium for both DeepL Write and Translate. It offers several subscription options for both variants.
Limitations in the free version: DeepL Write: a limit on the number of characters that can be inserted at once.
Advanced features: in DeepL Write: a feature to choose a possible style and tone. It also offers a dictionary.
Extensions: a quality browser add-on.
Interface: clean, clear, the page can also be displayed in other languages.
Security: the tool is regularly updated, strong security policy.
CorrectorApp
Main function: grammar and spelling correction, multilingual support, allows checking text in various languages and does not require registration.
Price: free.
Limitations in the free version: 15,000 characters that can be corrected at once, does not offer a paid version, focuses only on basic grammatical and spelling errors.
Advanced features: none.
Extensions: it offers extensions for web browsers (Chrome, Firefox).
Interface: no registration, the interface is very intuitive and ads appear quite often precisely because it is a free tool, the interface itself can be switched to several languages (English, Spanish, French), texts can be corrected in more than 25 languages.
Security: regularly updated, but the exact date of the last update cannot be found.
Other: it is suitable for users writing in various languages.
WordTune
Main function: grammar correction, for rewriting and improving text for a more natural sound, it is not just a grammar checker, but also an assistant helping with the formulation of ideas.
Limitations in the free version: freemium.
Advanced features: rewriting, choice of styles, text expansion, text narrowing, synonyms.
Extensions: for browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge, an online web application (Editor), an add-in for Microsoft Office, a mobile app.
Interface: registration and login via email or Google/Facebook required, intuitive interface, no ads in the free version, can rewrite texts in other languages (over 20 languages), the interface is in English.
Security: they anonymize user inputs, do not use them to train AI models in a way that would violate privacy, the tool is regularly updated.
